Films have been kept on for over a century now. They tend to be one of the best source of entertainment for generations. They earn their revenue through multiple streams – theatrical release, home video, television broadcasts rights, and merchandising. However from all of it only theatrical box office earnings are considered to assess a films success.

The reason for this is easy availability of data and also historical practice. Inflation is also one of the factors which is not considered in making rankings. Due to this many achievements of the 60s and 70s films have been wiped out. The top 5 movies of all time are –

1. Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame is a 2019 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the Avengers, produced by Marvel Studios. It is a sequel to Avengers: Infinity War (2018). This film is the conclusion for the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe up to that point and also ending story for many main characters.

 With an estimated budget of $356 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made. Endgame was widely anticipated, and Disney backed the film with Marvel’s largest marketing campaign. It has grossed $2,797,800,564 worldwide.

2. Avatar

Avatar is a 2009 American science fiction film directed, written, produced, and co-edited by James Cameron. This film had the best life like real CGI. To achieve this fate the production of this film had to push further for a decade as the necessary technology was not available at the moment.

Avatar was officially budgeted at $237 million. Other estimates put the cost between $280 million and $310 million for production and at $150 million for promotion. Avatar has grossed $2,790,439,000 worldwide.

3. Titanic

Titanic is a 1997 American epic romance and disaster film directed, written, co-produced, and co-edited by James Cameron. It is based on the plot of the sinking RMS Titanic ship. It was the most majestic ship of its time. Titanic even got the title of unsinkable ship. It also held the record for most Oscar nominations and also most Oscars won by a single film.

The costs of filming Titanic eventually reached $200 million, a bit over $1 million per minute of screen time. It grossed $2,194,439,542 worldwide.

4. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a 2015 American epic space opera film produced, co-written and directed by J. J. Abrams. The Force Awakens was widely anticipated, and Disney backed the film with extensive marketing campaigns. It is the first installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, following the story of Return of the Jedi (1983).

5. Avengers: Infinity Wars

Avengers: Infinity War is a 2018 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the Avengers, produced by Marvel Studios. It is the sequel to The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. The movie features the Avengers and the Guardians of Galaxy in an attempt to Prevent Thanos from wiping half the universe.

The film was praised for the emotional weight of the story, the visual effects. Its budget is estimated to be between $316-400 million making it one of the most expensive films ever made. It grossed $2,048,359,754 worldwide.
