Milkha Singh, one of India’s first and top most sport superstars who took over everyone to be the greatest athlete, has died of COVID aged 91.

Named as the “Flying Sikh,” the athlete passed away due to post Covid-19 complications late on Friday night. He was admitted to the intensive care unit at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMR), Chandigarh.

Singh’s health started to worsen after being shifted out of the Covid-19 intensive care unit three days prior. Hospital authorities stated that since then he was having a fever and his oxygen levels were dropping.

“He fought hard but God has his ways and it was perhaps true love and companionship that both our mother Nirmalji and now Dad have passed away in a matter of 5 days,” read a statement from the family.

Milkha Singh, crowned as India’s greatest track athlete, was the first Indian to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in the 400m division in 1958. He also represented India at the Olympics in 1956, 1960 and 1964.

Five days ago, his wife Niraml Kaur, former Indian volleyball team captain, was also succumbed to this virus at the age of 85.
