Manika Batra penned history at Tokyo Olympics

Manika Batra pulled off an unbelievable comeback in her match against the higher ranked Margaryta Pesotska from Ukraine at the Tokyo Olympics at Round 2 beating her by 4-3.

This comeback not only cleared her road to Round 3 but also made her the first Indian Table Tennis player to reach Round 3 at Olympics.

Batra, currently placed at World No. 62 struggled initially to get her rhythm in the first two games, which ultimately resulted in losing them both in 10 minutes. However Manika picked herself up and caused a major upset to the Ukranian player.

Playing a 7 games thriller, Manika Batra created history as she managed to win 3 rounds out of 4 in little under an hour,her scorecard showing 11-4, 11-4, 7-11, 10-12, 11-8, 5-11, 7-11.

The 26-year-old Indian athlete made history on Day 1 itself of the Tokyo Olympics as she gave a proud moment for the nation becoming the first female paddles to win a Single’s match at the Olympics which came after a long span of 29 years.

She also became the first Indian player to reach the third round in Table Tennis at Olympic games.
