The 21-year-old girl from Punjab, India Harnaaz Sandhu gets crowned as Miss Universe 2021, as she brought home the same crown 21 years after Lara Datta’s win in 2000.
Harnaaz was born on 3rd March 2000 in Chandigarh, Punjab, she started doing modelling in her teenage. Harnaaz completed her schooling at Shivalik Public School and later attended the Post Graduate Government College for Girls. Currently, she is pursuing a master’s degree in public administration.
As her social media portrays Harnaaz enjoys spending time with her friends. Singing, acting, cooking and dancing are her topics of interest and for her personal fitness, Harnaaz prefers yoga, swimming and horse riding. In her free time, she turns herself into a writer, mainly writing couplets in Punjabi.
Harnaaz is highly inspired by her mother, as her mother managed to come out of the shackles of the patriarchal system and became a successful gynaecologist leading her family. This made Harnaaz support women’s causes and aid women’s empowerment. She also supports women’s constitutional rights to education, careers, and freedom of choice.
Harnaaz Sandhu represented India at the 70th Miss Universe 2021, held in Eilat, Israel. Andrea Meza, former Miss Universe 2020 from Mexico presented her the crown at the event which was streaming live globally. The first and the second runners-up were from Paraguay and South Africa respectively.
Harnaaz’s answer to the question asked as part of the top three round won the hearts of many by calling for less talk and more action. The question was “What advice would you give to young women watching on how to deal with the pressures they face today” she answered “The biggest pressure the youth of today is facing, is to believe in themselves. To know that you are unique makes you beautiful. Stop comparing yourselves with others and let’s talk about more important things that are happening worldwide. Come out, speak for yourself, because you are the leader of your life. You are the voice of your own. I believed in myself and that is why I am standing here today.”
Harnaaz was crowned as Miss Universe India 2021 in October. She started her beauty pageant journey back in 2017 at Times Fresh Face. Harnaaz also has multiple pageant titles like Femina Miss India Punjab 2019, as well.
