Here are the top five fastest cars in the world right now

Published on

Since the birth of the automobiles, which is basically an engine put under an aerodynamically designed chassis, automakers have been racing to produce the fastest car in the world. Thorough documentation about this battle only goes back to the 1940s when we started seeing the race for the fastest.

The 1980s brought the first major breakthrough when the 200-mph barrier was broken. Since there is an on-going race and now we have also broken the 300-mph-barrier. Here’s a list of top 5 fastest cars in the world according to claimed or proven high speed.

SSC Tuatara: 316 mph (Disputed)

SSC Tuatara clocked a top speed of 300 mph, up from the original figure of 265 mph when the vehicle was officially unveiled. But at the time they posted the highest speed, unfortunately, that’s when the controversy started. Jerod Shelby, SSC’s CEO, stated that the company would attempt another top speed run with the Tuatara soon.

Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+: 304 mph

In 2019, Buggatti claimed the top spot formerly in the name of Hennessey Venom F5. the Chiron Super Sport 300+ also became the first car to break 300 miles per hour on the track. The final record was 304.773 mph with racing driver Andy Wallace at the wheel on Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessien test track in Germany.

Hennessey Venom F5: 301 mph (Claimed)

Before Buggatti snatched the record for being the fastest, Hennessey Performance Engineering held the top spot. The F5 has a theoretical and claimed top speed of 301 mph, besting the next fastest car by a solid margin.

Koenigsegg Agera RS: 278 mph

If we only consider the claimed runs, then the world’s fastest cars list skips Hennessey and SSC and picks back up with the Koenigsegg Agera RS, just until Buggatti broke the 300 mph barrier. The average pace (including one run at 285 mph) was recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Hennessey Venom GT: 270 mph

The Hennessey Venom GT came out of nowhere to topple the mighty Bugatti Veyron. This made sure that the name of Hennessey was known to each and every one. With approval from the Kennedy Space Center, Hennessey recorded a top speed of 270.4 mph. Though the Guinness Book of World Records approved the run, it has received a fair bit of criticism.
