Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II and a leading figure in the royal family for seven decades has died at 99, Buckingham Palace said on Friday.

“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”
He, officially known as The Duke of Edinburgh, had been by his wife’s, Queen Elizabeth II, side for 69 years of her reign which is the longest in the British history.

His death came just months before his 100th birthday in June. The couple were living in a bubble with some royal staff at Windsor Castle, west of London as their advanced age put them in increased risk from COVID-19.
“We give thanks, as a nation and a kingdom, for the extraordinary life and work of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said outside 10 Downing Street.
