Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp on verge of ban in India?

Published on

Social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Instagram are on the verge of getting banned in India after the ban of huge Chinese mobile apps.

The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MEITy) in February 2021 released new IT guidelines that need to be followed by technology companies to stay in India. The Ministry gave the social media giants a three months time frame to adjust and comply with these guidelines.

Only Koo, the Indian alternative to Twitter managed to adhere with these new guidelines, while foreign gainst failed to do so. This raised the question “is Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp getting banned in India?”

On 25th May a Facebook spokesperson informed that, “We aim to comply with the provisions of the IT rules and continue to discuss a few of the issues which need more engagement with the government. Pursuant to the IT Rules, we are working to implement operational processes and improve efficiencies. Facebook remains committed to people’s ability to freely and safely express themselves on our platform.”

As of now there is no comment from Twitter on the situation. But the recent incident of a Police raid on Twitter office in Delhi showed that the government can take things seriously.

The official statement from the government clarified that  if Twitter and other companies fail to comply with the new rules, then criminal action can be taken against them. They will lose their status as intermediaries.
