Being the United States President, Donald Trump receives special treatment from Twitter whenever he violates the company’s rules around offensive or misleading content as he is one of the world leaders. But this exemption will end by January if he loses White House.
Social networking sites treat activities from world leader differently than the regular users, this often leaves up tweets that violate its content policies, adding a warning instead of forcing users to delete the posts. This is due to Twitter’s philosophy which says that people should be able to know from world leaders even if it will be controversial.
Though, this exemption is not applicable for the former world leaders. Even all the high profile politicians are also treated as regular users.
Twitter confirmed that, if Trumps fails to win the election he will fall into the former leaders group. And by seeing the type of tweets he makes on the platform, breaking one of Twitter’s rules means his tweets may be removed entirely instead of labelled as it happened earlier.
Twitter has already hidden eight separate tweets of Trump which violated company’s rules. As of now world leader can’t get strikes even if they go against the policies, only the tweet will be labelled as hidden but can be seen if the users choses to click through.
But if he loses the election and then continue to violate the policies, his account can see a temporary or permanent suspension.
“A critical function of our service is providing a place where people can openly and publicly respond to their leaders and hold them accountable,” a Twitter spokesman said in a statement. “With this in mind, there are certain cases where it may be in the public’s interest to have access to certain tweets, even if they would otherwise be in violation of our rules.”
